Cape Horn in Tierra del Fuego

Continent or ocean
Region

If you cross the Strait of Magellan from Punta Arenas (Chile) in a southerly direction, you will reach a country that was named "Tierra del Fuego" by Captain Magellan in 1520. Politically, the eastern part belongs to Argentina and the rest of the west to Chile. In the Argentine part, Ushuaia is located on the Beagle Channel, the southernmost city in Argentina and the capital of "Tierra del Fuego".

The Beagle Channel and the Strait of Magellan connect the Pacific and Atlantic and reduce the risks of the stormy Drake Passage, which leads through the open sea around Cape Horn, for shipping. Our spontaneous idea to sail even further south to the islands off Cape Horn was quickly rejected after we looked at a map in Ushuaia with around 600 (documented) sunken boats and ships.

From Ushuaia you can take very nice trips into the hinterland and boat tours on the Beagle Channel. A rich flora and fauna as well as impressive views from the mountains invite you to linger longer.
