Budapest on the Danube is the capital of Hungary. The city was created in 1873 by merging Buda and Obuda on the western side of the Danube with Pest on the eastern side of the river. From a geotectonic point of view, Budapest lies on a fracture point. This explains the city's many thermal springs.
Of the many mountains in Budapest, Castle Hill has a special tourist attraction: the Fisherman's Bastion. Frigyes Schulek built the neo-Romanesque monument between 1895 and 1902 on the site of the medieval fish market. The conical towers of this building are supposed to be reminiscent of the tents of the Magyars.
