The town of Vadsø is connected to the interesting island of Vadsøya by a bridge. At the right time of the year, this island is a popular destination for birdwatchers and as soon as you arrive you can see the Birders Basecamp. The island is an important wetland for wading birds and there are ancient and modern cultural monuments to explore.
The only airship mast on the European continent is on the island. In 1926 the airship "Norge" docked here. From here we went on to the "transpolar flight" via Spitsbergen and the North Pole to Alaska.
At that time, the adventurers Amundsen, Nobile and Elsworth set themselves at the forefront of what was technically feasible in airship travel. On the small island we were looking for phalaropes (Phalaropus lobatus). Unfortunately we were unsuccessful and had to content ourselves with recordings of reindeer and goosanders.
